Some of you eager backyard farmers have been wondering about the progress of our home aquaponics prototype. Well we have progressed a lot since the last post.

We moved the unit outside, got the plumbing worked out and moved it back inside since the last update. Because it is inside the office at our urban farm in Chandler, we have a grow light doing the sunshine duty. As you can see from the photos, we are using volcanic rock as a growing medium. The lettuce that you see growing was direct seeded right in the rock.

The system is preforming extraordinarily well so far. We still have some tinkering and experimenting to do but we are getting closer to planning out the production model. If you or anyone you know has an interest in a home aquaponics growing unit, drop us a line and give us your questions and thoughts!

An increasing number of builders are taking advantage of the RESNET HERS Index. Over the past month, builders in states ranging from Delaware to Washington have entered into Memorandums of Understanding (MOU) with RESNET. In the MOUs the builders commit to having their homes energy rated by a certified RESNET rater and marketing their homes’ HERS Index.

The following are the new state and regional builders who have made the commitment in August 2011:

Charles Thomas Homes

The intent of the MOUs is to raise consumers’ knowledge of new home energy performance by using RESNET’s HERS Index. This will clearly differentiate homes built by the local and regional and put competitive pressure on the new home industry in their markets to follow suit. It is expected that this agreement will serve as a model to other local and regional builders that would have positive outcomes for consumers, RESNET and the new home industry.

RESNET is interested in entering into similar agreements with other regional and local builders. Energy raters who have builder clients interested in entering into an agreement with RESNET should contact Steve Baden at sbaden@resnet.us

The listing of all builders who have made the commitment go to Builder HERS Index Commitment

Greetings!

Welcome to the latest edition of airfAQS®, AQS’s newsletter focusing on all things indoor air quality (IAQ). This issue features information on indoor air pollutants and high performance technology. From VOC emissions associated with electronics and office equipment (see In the Air), to the impacts of ultrafine particles (see UFP update), we remain at the forefront of IAQ science and testing technology and enjoy sharing the latest information with you.

Formaldehyde continues to be one of the most important IAQ issues in the marketplace today (see From the Field). Recent amendments to the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) establish formaldehyde emission standards for hardwood plywood, medium-density fiberboard, and particleboard that is sold, supplied, offered for sale, or manufactured in the United States. This is a significant step toward creating a national standard to regulate formaldehyde emissions from composite wood products altogether! AQS is excited to offer its expertise in chamber technology to assist product manufacturers through this process.

FAQS is dedicated to providing knowledge and innovative solutions to critical indoor environmental quality issues—which impact product performance and public health! So, no matter which industry you serve, keep up to date on the latest IAQ news by following AQS on Twitter , Facebook , and LinkedIn . We look forward to connecting with you.

From the Field

Formaldehyde: Rising Importance of Lessening Exposure

Time has passed since hurricanes Katrina and Rita devastated the Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama coastlines, causing concern for high levels of formaldehyde found in FEMA travel trailers and temporary housing. Still today, there is a great deal of confusion regarding permissible levels of airborne formaldehyde in U.S. homes and other indoor environments.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), acute and chronic health effects from exposure to formaldehyde vary depending on individual sensitivity. Most people can detect the odor of formaldehyde at levels as low as 50 ppb (0.05 ppm). The typical threshold for developing acute symptoms due to inhaled formaldehyde is 800 ppb (0.8 ppm); however, sensitive individuals have reported symptoms at levels around 100 ppb (0.1 ppm) or less. Other studies also have demonstrated that health effects can occur in sensitized individuals at 100 ppb (0.1 ppm) or less for chronic exposures to formaldehyde. Upper respiratory tract irritation can potentially exacerbate asthma symptoms and other respiratory illnesses, but there is no evidence that exposure to formaldehyde causes asthma, nor is it considered to have reproductive or developmental effects on humans (CDC 2008).

Whether or not formaldehyde causes cancer has been extensively studied and debated over the past 30 years. In June 2004, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) reclassified formaldehyde from “probably carcinogenic to humans” to “carcinogenic to humans” for nasopharyngeal cancer (IARC 2004). In 2011 the National Toxicology Program (NTP) reclassified formaldehyde from “reasonably anticipated to be a carcinogen in humans” to “known to be a human carcinogen”. Uncertainty remains as to how to quantitatively relate measured air concentrations of formaldehyde to cancer risk. Since people are exposed to formaldehyde every day and many other factors play a role in the development of cancer, no definitive “high risk” levels can be determined. In general, the lower the level and shorter the duration of exposure, the less risk of cancer and other health effects (CDC 2008). By 1992, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) formally listed formaldehyde as a Toxic Air Contaminant in California with absolutely no safe levels of exposure.

In the Air

Chemical Emissions From Electronics

The concepts of “green computing” and “green electronics” have become more popular as manufacturers strive to meet consumers and institutional buyers’ demands for products that have minimal or no impact on the environment and are safe to use. Products in these categories include copiers, tabletop printers (laser and inkjet), computers (desktop and notebooks), monitors, scanners, fax machines, and consumer electronic devices, such as DVD and Blu-ray players.

These machines, particularly computers, monitors and printers, are often located in close proximity to those working with them, which is very convenient, but may also increase the risk of inhaling volatile organic compounds (VOCs), semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs), ozone, and particulate emissions as they operate. Exposure to elevated levels of these indoor contaminants may cause acute irritation and exacerbate chronic illnesses, including allergy and asthma attacks. While this is an important consideration for adults, the risk to children may be even greater as they are more susceptible to environmental pollutants.

Minimizing these risks depends on a challenging process of accurately identifying what is being emitted and quantifying the volume of the emissions.

It is a vicious cycle though, while global warming speeds up the oxygen loss in the oceans, this oxygen loss speeds the global warming.

What can we do to slow and stop the process? We should pay more attention to research as a start! Read on. We have some interesting data to share!

Throughout the world, large areas of our coastal waters are becoming so polluted that they lack sufficient oxygen , one of the basic building blocks of life. This condition is called “hypoxia” (low oxygen).

In aquatic ecosystems, low oxygen usually means a concentration of less than 2-3 milligrams of oxygen per liter of water (mg/l). A complete lack of oxygen (0 mg/L) is called anoxia. Since organisms that can live without oxygen (such as some microbes) are the only residents in these areas, they are sometimes called “dead zones” .

Although this is sometimes a natural condition, the increased area of water affected, extended length of each episode, and higher frequency in recent decades are due to human activities. Over-enrichment of estuaries and coastal waters with nutrients, especially nitrogen, stimulates outbreaks or “blooms” of algae that consume vital oxygen from the water when they decompose.

Oxygenated water is necessary for aquatic animals to breathe. Mobile animals, such as adult fish, can often survive hypoxia by moving into oxygenated waters. Non-mobile animals, such as clams, cannot move into healthier waters and are often killed by hypoxic episodes.

The RESNET Board of Directors adopted the amending of the RESNET standards on calculating the auxiliary electric energy of ground source heat pumps . The amendment was proposed by the RESNET Technical Committee and underwent the RESNET standards amendment public review and comment process.
There were errors in the original amendment on Auxiliary Electric Energy of Ground Source Heat Pumps. First, the AHRI/ISO 13256 standard rating process includes an allowance for fan internal static pressure, which was double-counted in the original proposal. This amendment corrects the value from 0.5 W/CFM to 0.2 W/CFM, to reflect only fan external static pressure. Second, the AHRI/ISO 13256 standard rating process includes an allowance for pump internal static pressure, which was double-counted in the original proposal. This amendment corrects the added pump energy by subtracting a reasonable allowance for the rated pump energy under test conditions, before adding the actual pump energy as installed. Third, this amendment adds an efficiency adjustment that may be used for projected ratings in the absence of detailed pre-construction information about the pump. Finally, this amendment states explicitly that, for calculating adjusted equipment efficiency, the additional external fan energy GSHPfanESP must also be added to the rated heating capacity and subtracted from the rated cooling capacity.
The RESNET Technical Committee began work on the amendment was the result of being contacted by the Chairman of the AHRI Applied Packaged System Section & ISO TC 86/SC6 Testing & Rating of Heat Pumps and Air Conditioners regarding some flaws in the way the RESNET Standard calculated pump and fan energy. The standard double counted the auxiliary energy needed to overcome the internal static pressure of the GSHP.
To view the new chapter of the RESNET standards click on RESNET Auxiliary Electric Energy of Ground Source Heat Pumps Amendment
© 2011 RESNET
Residental Energy Services Network
